HIKING + NATURE
INTO THE WOODS
This landscape is defined as much by its forests as its lakes. Together, they form the essence of the Haliburton Highlands. The mixed forests are layered with sugar maple, white pine, hemlock, yellow birch, and cedar—an ecosystem that has shaped everything we've built and continues to influence how we experience this place.
DAHL FOREST
Just beyond Hårtwood, Dahl Forest winds through mature hardwood forest, red and jack pine plantations, wetlands, and along the Burnt River. With approximately 8 kilometres of interconnected trails directly from Hårtwood, it's where we head for an early morning walk, an afternoon picnic, or simply to reconnect with the forest.
WHERE WE HIKEBARNUM CREEK NATURE RESERVE
One of the Highlands' most diverse trail systems. Barnum Creek weaves through maple forest, wetlands, open meadows, and historic farm fields, with boardwalks, beaver ponds, and gentle creek crossings creating a landscape that changes around every corner. It's a favourite for birdwatching, photography, and one of our top picks for trail running.
RIDGE TRAIL HIKING NETWORK
One of the region's best hiking destinations. From the short but steep climb to the James Cooper Lookout to longer routes like the Ridge Trail, Circuit of 5 Viewpoints, and Crest of Kennisis, the interconnected trail network offers everything from accessible viewpoints to challenging backcountry hikes.
QUEEN ELIZABETH II WILDLANDS
For a more rugged day outdoors, this protected wilderness offers some of the most remote hiking in Southern Ontario. Expect rougher trails, fewer people, and a landscape that feels wonderfully untouched. Best for experienced hikers with access to proper navigation tools.
