THE HIGHLANDS FROM THE WATER

The Canadian Shield has a way of drawing you toward the water. Maybe it's the warmth of the granite after a hike, the relief of a cold swim on a summer afternoon, or simply the way every winding road seems to end at another lake. Around here, being near the water isn't an activity—it's part of the rhythm of the day. Over the years, we've come to know a handful of places we return to again and again. Some are well known, others are easy to miss, but each has earned a place in this guide.

OUR FAVOURITE PLACES TO SWIM

KOSHLONG LAKE

Some of our favourite swimming spots aren't on a map. Along the undeveloped Crown land shoreline of Koshlong Lake you'll find sun-warmed granite outcrops, quiet picnic spots, and deep, crystal-clear water perfect for an afternoon swim. If you're feeling adventurous, ask us about our favourite jumping rock—we're always happy to point you in the right direction.

BISSETT BEACH

One of the Highlands' best public beaches, Bissett Beach offers a long sandy shoreline, shallow water, and plenty of space to spend an easy afternoon by the lake. It's an excellent option for families or anyone looking for a classic day at the beach.

RITCHIE FALLS

One of the Highlands' best-known swimming holes. The falls tumble over broad granite ledges into clear pools that are perfect on a warm summer afternoon.

BURNT RIVER

Just a short walk from Hårtwood, the Burnt River is one of our favourite places to end a hike through the Dahl Forest. Smooth granite, moving water, and deep pools. A truly wilderness experience, making it ideal for a refreshing swim, an afternoon picnic, or simply sitting beside the current.

PADDLE THE HIGHLANDS

If swimming lets you experience the Highlands from within the landscape, paddling lets you move quietly through it.

The region is home to countless lakes and gentle rivers, making it easy to spend a few hours—or an entire day—exploring by canoe, kayak, or paddleboard. Early mornings often bring mirror-like water, while evenings reward you with long reflections and remarkable sunsets.

Local outfitters offer canoe, kayak, and SUP rentals, and guided experiences such as SUP Yoga provide another memorable way to spend time on the water.
