Makers + Local finds
There's a certain kind of creativity that seems to thrive in these hills. Perhaps it's the space to work undisturbed, the influence of the landscape, or simply the freedom to do things a little differently. Over the years, we've come to know artists, makers and collectors whose work reflects that independent spirit. From pottery made by hand to vintage pieces with stories of their own, these are some of the people and places that have caught our attention. Some have shops you can wander into, others work quietly behind doors that open only occasionally. We've learned that the best finds aren't always the easiest to come by.
MADE, FOUND, COLLECTED.
MAKERS + STUDIOS
The Highlands has long attracted artists and craftspeople who find inspiration and room to create among the trees. We're particularly drawn to the region's ceramicists, including Blackbird Pottery and Homestead Pottery, whose work reflects the beauty of things made slowly and by hand. Many studios welcome visitors by appointment or during special events, so it's worth checking ahead.
A FEW OF OUR FAVOURITESVINTAGE
We love a good vintage find, especially when there's a little history attached. From the carefully collected clothing at Mixtape Vintage to the European furniture and antiques at Castle, there are a few places around Haliburton where it's easy to lose track of time browsing. You never quite know what you'll come across.
SHOPS
A few independent shops have become regular stops whenever we're in town. Redmans Records is a favourite for flipping through vinyl, while Snaffle & Mane brings an entirely different kind of creativity through flowers and thoughtful floral design. Different in every way, except that they're both doing something distinctly their own.
ART + WORKSHOPS
There's something special about an art school in a small town. The Haliburton School of Art + Design has brought artists, makers and curious minds together in the Highlands for generations, leaving its mark on the community in countless ways. Lauren found her way here after university, earning a diploma in Visual Art and Photography, and it's a place that remains close to our hearts. The school continues to offer courses and workshops, while the neighbouring Glebe Park is home to an outdoor sculpture collection woven through the woods.
