WINTER
THE SEASON WE WAIT FOR
There is no season that defines this landscape more completely than winter. Snow transforms the forest, frozen lakes become part of the trail network, and the granite of the Canadian Shield emerges in sharp relief against the white. It's a season of remarkable clarity, and the one that continues to draw us outside more than any other. If we could recommend just one season to visit, it would be winter.
WHAT WINTER MEANS TO USWe are Canadian, so winter has always been part of our story. But it wasn't until we moved to the Haliburton Highlands that we began to see it differently. Here, winter is experienced rather than observed.
Instead of resisting the season, we learned to live well with it. We learned to welcome the cold rather than retreat from it. We sought out movement, gathered around the fire, and learned to pay attention to the changing light. Over time, those rituals became values that extended far beyond the season itself. They continue to shape how we live, and ultimately became the philosophy on which Fort was built.
There is an inherent permission to slow down, but not in the way people often imagine. Winter replaces urgency with intention. You move more deliberately. You notice more. A morning on skis, an afternoon splitting wood, a walk through falling snow, a quiet evening by the fire—each becomes enough. The days feel simpler, fuller, and somehow more complete.
This is why, if asked to choose only one season, we would always choose winter.
NORDIC SKIING
If there is one experience that defines winter for us, it's cross-country skiing. The Haliburton Highlands Nordic Trails Association maintains two exceptional trail systems, offering some of the best opportunities to experience a truly Canadian winter. Rental equipment and lessons are available in Haliburton for those new to the sport.
WINTER RITUALSSNOWSHOEING
There is something wonderfully simple about snowshoeing. No lift tickets or perfect conditions required—just fresh snow and a willingness to wander. It's often the easiest way to experience the forest after a snowfall, when the landscape feels at its quietest. At Hårtwood, the trails begin just beyond your treehouse. At The Baltic, a short drive opens the door to some of our favourite winter walks. Complimentary snowshoes are provided at both properties
DOGSLEDDING
Few experiences connect you to winter quite like travelling behind a team of dogs. It's exhilarating, deeply rooted in Canadian winter traditions, and offers an entirely different perspective on the landscape. If you're curious to experience it for yourself, we always recommend Winterdance Dogsled Tours.
SKATING ON A FROZEN LAKE
On the right day, a frozen lake becomes a place to explore rather than simply admire. Whether on a maintained outdoor rink or natural ice when conditions safely allow, skating is one of winter's simplest pleasures. We'll gladly help you find the right place to lace up.
